The entire pashmina making process is done by hand. Pashmina wool is collected every spring from the mountain goat "Chyangra" (Capra Hircus). Each goat produces only about 3 ounces of pashmina wool each year. With one pashmina shawl needing a minimum of 9 ounces, it takes about three goats to give that much. The yarn is spun on a spinning wheel locally known as 'Charkha' and then woven on a traditional loom. Hand-work is extremely painstaking and time-consuming task. It requires immense patience, dexterity, and dedication of experienced and expert workers.
The best way to prepare for carpet installation is to make sure that all of your small loose items are packed up, the tops of dressers cleared off, your electronics are disconnected, the bottom row of clothing from your closets is moved, everything is removed from your closet floors and that nothing is left under your bed. Rather than putting things on top of your furniture or bed, please move loose items to a room that isn't going to be carpeted. It is also a good idea to strip your bed to avoid the dust that can occur during installation. You may need to arrange for unusual items like artwork, aquariums or sculptures to be moved by others ahead of time. Lastly, secure any valuables and keepsakes before installation and make a note to remind yourself where you stored those things. The room temperature should be between 65 and 80 degrees 48 hours before and after the carpet installation. Make sure that there is access to fully functioning electrical outlets because power tools will need to be utilized during installation. It is important to make sure your heating and cooling systems are functioning properly because airflow is the best way to dissipate the smells associated with new carpet and padding.

‘Pheran’ has a long, storied history in Kashmir, and is believed to have a tradition of at least 660 years. Worn over centuries by the inhabitants to brave the harsh winter chill, the garment has worked as a great leveler of the Kashmiri society. It has traditionally dissolved the class difference, being the preferred dress for both the rich and the poor during the cold season. Even when modernity permeated the lives of Kashmiris over the years, the pheran continued to remain a badge of its culture.
One distinct difference between pashmina and generic cashmere is the fibre diameter. Pashmina fibres are finer and thinner (12–15 microns) than generic cashmere fibre (15–19 microns). Pashmina is made from the mountain goat hair called Capra Hircus, whereas cashmere made from the magnolia goat hair. The breed of the goat is different for both the fabrics.
Home Carpet One carries a variety of pads for you to consider. Under looped carpets, we recommend firmer pads of at least an eight pound density. Depending on the price of the carpet, we will include either a 1/4 rebond pad or a 3/8 rebond pad. For stairs and under woven carpets, we will include a felt pad, which is extremely firm. If you want a more luxurious feel under a looped carpet, we offer either rubber pads or Healthinex Memory Foam. Both are great if you have radiant heat floors and have excellent anti-microbial properties. The memory foam pad can even be used on stairs and under woven carpets. If you want the greenest padding choice, we also carry an all-wool pad called Big Foot. For cut pile carpets, we include a softer pad called Luxury. The same upgrade choices are available for these types of carpets.
Depending on the size of your kitchen counters, the ideal length and width is usually 20'' by 14''. Longer or wider sizes add unnecessary weight and also make the carving board hard to store. Oversized carving boards can be very difficult to wash if they don’t fit into your kitchen sink. A 20'' meat carving board will easily hold a midsize turkey or a 5 lb roast. As for height or thickness, your carving board should generally be around 0.75'' inches. It should be thick enough to sit securely on the counter, but still easy to lift. Thinner boards are much easier to store and wash than thicker cutting boards, but they are also more likely to slip on the counter.
Kashmiris love their ‘pherans’. These loose, warm outer garments are typically worn during winters. They are comfortable, practical and as Kashmiri as lungi is to a Malayali or kilt to the Scottish. Given the valley’s surcharged political atmosphere, and an ongoing insurgency that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the recent decades, the last thing Kashmiris expected is a ban on their beloved ‘pheran’.
